Russian tenor Evgeny Belyaev sings “You are always beautiful”, a love song composed by Boris Mokrousov and arranged by Boris Alexandrovich Alexandrov. Recorded live at the Albert Hall, London, 1963, this is the performance by Belyaev that was described by The Times critic as “perfect”.

You are always beautiful (2007 Remastered Version). Conductor: Col. Boris Alexandrov, Soloist (Tenor): Evgeny Belyaev, Chorus & Orchestra: Soviet Army Chorus & Orchestra, Producer: Walter Jellinek, Composer, Lyricist: Boris Mokrousov

Summary of the lyrics:

“Happy or sad, my beloved, you are always beautiful. Beautiful as a song, as a Russian soul! Though the northern evening is cold, with you it is warm! Our wedding day dawns soon; happiness will be ours, and you will be my life’s companion, my beloved.”

Here is another video of the song from 1962, with English subtitles.

“You Are Always Beautiful” – Yevgeny Belyaev and the Alexandrov Red Army Choir (1962)

“You are always beautiful” lyrics (English translation)

The down is lit up above the blue river
The northern evening is cool, but I feel warm with you.

Whether cheerful or sad, you are always beautiful
Like our Russian songs, like a Russian soul

Chorus:
Whether cheerful or sad, you are always beautiful
Like our Russian songs, like a Russian soul

Living with you without grief for many years
Living with you, the blue-eyed, we will always be alright

Whether cheerful or sad, you are always beautiful
Like our Russian songs, like a Russian soul

We will ride our wedding horses along the street very soon
You will be my companion in life and my song (I sing every day)

Whether cheerful or sad, you are always beautiful
Like our Russian songs, like a Russian soul

Chorus:
Whether cheerful or sad, you are always beautiful
Like our Russian songs, like a Russian soul

Evgeny Mikhailovich Belyaev (Klintsy, September 11, 1926 – February 21/22, 1994) was a Russian tenor soloist of the Alexandrov Ensemble under Boris Alexandrov. In the West, he was known as one of the definitive singers of the famous Russian song Kalinka. He was known as the “Mr. Kalinka”.

This superb lyric tenor did not get the worldwide acclaim that he deserved during his lifetime; possibly because his prime occurred in the middle of the Cold War. Also, his fame was subsumed within the fame of the Alexandrov Ensemble itself when perhaps he would have gained greater personal fame had he pursued his natural course in the international opera circuit.
