Strauss – Also sprach Zarathustra (Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel)

Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) plays Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra” (Thus Spoke Zarathustra or Thus Spake Zarathustra), a tone poem composed in 1896. The work is inspired by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical novel of the same name, and has been an important part of the classical repertoire since its first performance in 1896. The initial fanfare – titled “Sunrise” in the composer’s program notes – became particularly well-known after its use in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
